Yes ladies and gents, it’s that time again. Lovable little urchins roam
the streets demanding sweets with menace. Your local pub is covered in
cobwebs and the barmaid has a hairy wart on her crooked nose. For some
that’s just a normal Saturday night. For others it can mean only one
thing - Halloween! A week from now rotting pumpkins with grotesque faces
will be waiting on doorsteps for the dustman. But for now let’s just
enjoy this pagan custom, corrupted by a consumer society that’s
careering out of control. Ahem, sorry. Trick or treat anyone!

Nosferatu
“Is this your wife? What a lovely
throat” says vampire Count Orlok in this classic 1922 black and
white silent movie, loosely based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula story.
The tale is all too familiar - vampire meets girl, vampire bites
girl, vampire and girl settle down in a nice castle in the country.
But Nosferatu has to be one of the most chilling vampire movies ever
made. Perfect viewing for Halloween. |

Night of the Living Dead
Also perfect for a spooky night in is this oft
copied and fondly spoofed 1968 classic horror movie. Radiation from
a fallen satellite causes the recently deceased to rise from the
grave with a real hunger for human flesh. There’s only one thing for
the living to do. Hide in an old farmhouse overnight of course! |
These terrific
movies are free to Wippit Subscribers. If you
want something a little lighter for the darkest night of the year we’ll
let you have
Shaun of the Dead for only
£9.99.

Natalie Williams
Born in West Berlin, but (not so scary)
Natalie Williams
grew up listening to Miles
Davis, Billie Holiday
and Ella Fitzgerald.
The girlie swot graduated with a BA in jazz in London before
releasing her debut album Yours Truly in 2003. A nu-soul fusion of
jazz, R&B and hip-hop grooves, it had Williams compared with
Jill Scott and
India.Arie. Third album
Secret Garden continues the tradition, mixing influences from
Stevie Wonder to Henry
Mancini, Herbie Hancock
to Donna Hathaway. Williams will be playing five nights at London’s
Ronnie Scott’s club in November. |
