If ever a band deserved the term “cult” then Felt are it. The brainchild of Lawrence Hayward and influenced in equal measure by CBGBs alumni Television and the godfather of punk Lou Reed, Felt released their first self-recorded single, Index, back in 1979. Autocratically eccentric – original drummer Tony Race was fired for having curly hair while other band members were forbidden from using his toilet – Hayward ensured that Felt employed a revolving door policy to line ups. Their first album, The Strange Idols Pattern And Other Short Stories appeared in 1984 and was followed by a series of idiosyncratic EPs and albums that reached their peak with 1987’s Forever Breathes The Lonely Word. Felt split in 1989 without reaching the audience they truly deserved. If you missed Felt out the first time round, now’s the time to discover their joys.
