 One
of the many things we pride ourselves on is spotting the very best in up’n’coming talent and we reckon we’ve done it again.
Displaying a savage lyrical wit wrapped up in sharp musical shock -
surely it’s just a matter of time before Artex Monkey hits the big
time. Hear for

Crosbi - Sonny
This debut
release from the Wrexham quintet successfully combines the sound of
90s Britpoppers Cast with
the souring guitars of
Echo & The Bunnymen. Stay tuned for more. |

Embrace - Nature's Law
Ahead of the release of their fifth album, This New Day, Nature’s Law
finds Huddersfield’s finest continuing their pursuit of of anthemic
indie rock |

Viva Voce - Lesson Number One
Viva Voce
evoke the spirit and feeling of The Breeders in their prime with this
delightfully off-kilter ballad. Taken from their superb third album,
The Heat Can Melt Your Brain - and as used on T-Mobile's current ad
- this track should deservedly raise the profile of this incredible
band. |
|
Nouvelle Vague - Teenage Kicks
Nouvelle
Vague is the brainchild of producers Marc Collin and Olivier
Libaux who turn their favourite new wave tracks into bossanova and
tropicalia grooves. Here,
Modern English and
The
Undertones get the mellow treatment. |

New Young Pony Club - Get Lucky
London’s New Young Pony
Club is on a mission to make people dance. As displayed by this
cracking fusion of
New Order and LCD Soundsystem, it looks like they’re going to
succeed. |
|
Killing Joke - Hosannas From The Basement Of Hell
Hot on the heels of last
year’s Pandemonium album, everyone’s favourite proto – industrial
apocalyptic doom mongers return to strike yet more terror into the
hearts of the unsuspecting. |

Competition Time!
Congratulations to
Graham who races away with a copy of
Mogwai’s Mr Beast. Well done!
This week we have
three copies of nu-country sensation Cortney Tidwell’s
self-titled mini-album. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, her
skeletal, eerie music is sprinkled with subtle flashes of electronics
and her voice evokes the fragile sounds of Mazzy Star’s Hope
Sandoval and
Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Frazer. Moreover, we reckon that
Cortney Tidwell is a name we’ll be hearing more of. To stand a
chance of bagging a copy, simply answer this simple question:
On his 1969 album,
At San Quentin, the legendary
Johnny Cash sang of A Boy Named…

SOUTH BY SOUTH WEST FESTIVAL
Since its inception in downtown Austin, Texas, the South by South
West festival - aka SXSW – has, over the last 19 years, grown from
being a jolly for a few hundred US indie labels to the world’s
premier gathering of talent and those who spot it. As the festival
winds down for another year, we salute the British bands that have
flown the flag as they try to crack the U.S. Big ups go to Wippit
favourites
Mogwai,
Belle & Sebastian, Art Brut,
The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster,
The Rakes,
The Young
Knives, The Others and Lucky Luke.
